EOCSI initiative fosters South East Asian EO development

EOCSIis an initiative led by Australia’s national science and geoscience agencies, CSIROand Geoscience Australia to support the growth and implementation of Earth Observation (EO) -based products and services in South East Asia. 

The initiative uses a new EO analysis platform powered by CSIRO’s Earth Analytics Science and Innovation hub (EASI) built on Open Data Cube technology. Further information about the initiative can be found here. 

The EOCSI initiative has been supporting local governments, businesses and education institutions across the South East Asian region to take advantage of EO for the development of climate smart applications and support sustainable and tangible decision making. The initiative has fostered new partnerships and capacity building through hackathons, workshops and training. Outcomes of this initiative have already demonstrated benefits for local decision making through the development of products and applications towards: 

• Sustainably managing natural resources (e.g., freshwater lakes and rivers) 

• Addressing food security challenges (e.g., agriculture and aquaculture) 

• Climate change adaptation and mitigation 

• Managing urban development (e.g., monitoring deforestation)

By building relationships between Australian EO experts and South East Asian partners, this project has developed and strengthened regional science relations, supported science resilience, and promoted sustainable growth and development through business-to-business, market driven product development. 

In July 2022, the EOCSI hackathon welcomed over 80 participants from Australia and South East Asia to work together to explore opportunities related to the development of industry-driven geospatial products and services. Since November 2022 a handful have begun to turn their ideas into reality with additional technical training and business development activities.
